There are many reason for having your oil boiler serviced at least annually, possibly more frequently if the manufacturers recommend it. These include:

Heating oil or kerosene has been the fuel of choice for most people who live ‘off grid’ for many years and modern pressure jet boilers, when set up correctly, are very efficient to run. However kerosene, when burnt, is a dirtier fuel than gas and produces more soot which, if left to build up inside the boiler, will result in a significant drop in the system efficiency, a 10mm coating of soot on the inside of the boiler can reduce the efficiency by 15%. Regular servicing will ensure that the boiler will run at its maximum efficiency for longer periods, saving you money and significantly reducing the chances of a breakdown occurring in cold weather.

Oil storage and supply systems are now considered an area of major concern due to the risk of a serious environmental incident occurring. Having the oil tank and supply pipe checked as part of the annually boiler service can significantly reduce the chances of you experiencing a serious leak with the associated upheaval and clean-up costs this can involve.
